Anne Frank was born on June 12, 1929, in Frankfurt-on-Main in Germany.
Her parents were Otto and Edith Frank and she had one older sister, Margot.
NARRATOR:
Anne's family moved to Holland when she was young. Here, Anne excelled
in school and had many friends. She developed a love for writing which
led to her to start her diary, whom she called "Kitty". This
diary would soon prove to be her only friend as she and her family fought
for their lives against Hitler and the Nazi party.

TEXT:
During this time, Jews were forced to wear a star on their clothes so
everyone would know who they were. They were not allowed in movie theaters,
parks, swimming pools or other public places. They lost their jobs, their
stores were boycotted, books written by them were burned. They were seen
as inferior in every way. Eventually this led to the "final solution"
and the deportation of Jews to concentration camps.
SOUND:
Sounds of chaos - people yelling, screaming, children crying, etc.

NARRATOR:
Adolf Hitler was elected chancellor of Germany in 1933 on the platform
of racial purity. He believed that German people were a superior race,
better than other people in the world. His blamed the Jews for various
problems in Germany and in the world. Soon after he came to power, he
began to take action against the Jews.

NARRATOR:
To avoid being sent away, Anne's family went into hiding. In July 1942,
they moved into a hidden apartment in the back of Anne's father's business.
Anne gave it the name "the secret annex." The entrance was hidden
by a bookcase. Only seven people knew that the family was there - these
friends smuggled food and clothing to the Franks when they could.
NARRATOR:
Anne's family was joined by Mr. and Mrs. Van Pels and their fifteen-year-old
son, Peter. Soon, they were also joined by a dentist, Fritz Pfeffer.
NARRATOR:
During weekdays, when there were people in the building, they had to be
completely silent and spent much of the time creeping around. They didn't
dare to cough, laugh, or even use the bathroom. Anne described in her
diary a typical day in the life of the annex.
VOICE-OVER
AS ANNE:
The atmosphere is so oppressive, and sleepy and as heavy as lead; you
don't hear a single bird singing outside, and a deadly, sultry silence
hangs everywhere, catching hold of me as if it would drag me down deep
into an underworld… "Go outside, laugh, and take a breath of
fresh air," a voice cries within me.

NARRATOR:
Anne's worst nightmare came true when the Secret Annex was discovered
August 4, 1944 by the Nazis. They were taken prisoner. They were sent
to Westerbork, a concentration camp in Holland, where they were made to
work for the Nazis. A month later, they were sent to Auschwitz, a concentration
camp in Poland where the conditions were horrible. In October, Anne and
Margot were sent to Bergen-Belsen, a camp in Germany. They would never
see their parents again. Edith Frank died in Auschwitz, while Anne and
Margot died in Bergen-Belsen. Anne was one of 1 million children under
the age of 16 to have died in the Holocaust.

After the war, Otto Frank was the only person who had been hiding in the
Secret Annex to survive. He returned to Holland, where Miep Gies, who
had helped hide the family, had saved Anne's diary. Otto decided to have
it published in her memory. Today, her diary has been translated into
67 languages and is one of the most widely read books in the world.
